How to Earn the Southwest Companion Pass With Two Credit Cards: Your Step-by-Step Roadmap OCTOBER 2026
Want to bring your favorite travel buddy along on Southwest flights without paying for a second airfare?
What if I told you that with a little strategy, the right credit card bonuses, and some smart timing, you could potentially unlock this benefit for nearly TWO YEARS?
It's one of my favorite ways to make family travel more affordable, and the best part? You don't necessarily need to spend a fortune or own a huge business to make it happen.
Let's walk through how it works, whether you're a good candidate, and exactly what to do next.
Quick recap if you're new to the Southwest Companion Pass
The Southwest Companion Pass lets you designate someone to fly with you on Southwest flights without paying their airfare. You'll still pay applicable taxes and fees, starting at $5.60 one-way on domestic flights.
And yes, this works whether you book your own flight with cash OR Southwest Rapid Rewards points! The pass is valid for the remainder of the calendar year in which you earn it AND the entire following calendar year. Oh and did I mention there's no cap on how many times you use it? That's why we love her.
Here's where the magic happens:
If you earn your Companion Pass early in January, you could potentially enjoy it for almost 24 months. Imagine how many family trips, weekend getaways, and visits to loved ones you could squeeze into that time!
So.... how do you earn it?
Normally, earning the Southwest Companion Pass requires:
135,000 Companion Pass qualifying points in a single calendar year, OR
100 qualifying one-way Southwest flights in a calendar year.
Both ways earned traditionally require lots of spending or lots of flying. But here's the shortcut I love: qualifying credit card welcome bonuses can count toward that 135,000-point requirement.
That's where the accelerated two-card method comes in.
By strategically combining a Southwest personal credit card and a Southwest business credit card, you are able to earn all of the points needed without stepping on a plane or spending a ton of money.
The eligibility pre-check: Are you a good candidate?
Before applying, let's answer four questions.
Question 1: Have you earned a Southwest personal card welcome bonus in the last 24 months?
NO?Ā Great! You may be in a good position to start.
YES?Ā You may need to wait before qualifying for another bonus. Chase has rules regarding previous bonuses and cards you currently hold. Typically you are reeligible once the 24 month mark has passed,
Question 2: Do you have a side hustle or small business?
YES?Ā Amazing! You may qualify for a Southwest business credit card.
And here's something a lot of people don't realize: you don't need a storefront, employees, or a big company.
Some examples of small businesses include:
Selling products online or reselling items for profit
Freelance writing, design, or consulting
Photography
Pet sitting or lawn care
Tutoring
Food delivery service
Running a blog or creating content
Any of the above items qualify you. Simply apply using your Social Security number if you don't have an EIN.
NO?Ā That's okay! Consider whether starting a small income-producing side hustle fits your life.
Question 3: Have you earned a welcome bonus on the Southwest business card you're considering in the last 24 months, or do you currently hold that card?
NO?Ā š Great! You're one step closer! Keep going!
YES?Ā You may need to wait until you're eligible for another welcome bonus or explore a different Southwest business card.
š” Keep in mind:Ā Chase's commonly discussed 3/24 guideline considers how many personal credit cards you've opened across issuers in the past 24 months. Even if you meet the basic requirements, approval and bonus eligibility are never guaranteed.
Question 4: Can you meet the minimum spending requirements using ONLY your normal, everyday expenses and pay your balance in full?
YES?Ā š Perfect! You're one step closer to earning your Southwest Companion Pass!
NO?Ā That's okay! It might not be the right time, and that's perfectly fine. You can always revisit this strategy when your normal spending aligns with the requirements.
š” Remember:Ā We're talking groceries, gas, utilities, insurance, and bills you're already paying. We NEVER spend extra money just to earn points or carry credit card debt to chase a bonus.
The goal is to SAVE money on travel, not create debt!Ā āļøš
The two-card strategy: How the points add up with current offers:
The Standout Combination Right Now āļø
Combined Welcome Bonuses: 140,000 points
Combined Required Spending: $5,000
Combined first year annual fees: $378
Points Earned for free flights: 140,000
Timing is EVERYTHING
Here's the part you absolutely do not want to miss.
Reread this as many times as you need in order to understand it completely and don't hesitate to reach out with questions. It's that important.
Southwest counts qualifying points based on the calendar year in which they post to your Rapid Rewards account. That means points earned in December and January could count toward two different qualification years.
Your goal is to maximize how long you hold the Companion Pass for, so you must, I repeat must earn all the qualifying points in the same year. In this case is has to be Janurary or beyond for maximum value.
For example, if you qualify in January 2027, your Companion Pass would generally be valid through December 31, 2028. That's almost two full years of bringing your favorite travel buddy along!
Be super careful here. Always double check your statement to see when your statement closes, and plan spending accordingly. In view of the timeline we're working with here, and out of an abundance of caution, I never recommend completing a mimimum spend before January 1.
Bonus points can also take a couple weeks to post. Official language states 8 weeks but I've never had it take more than a few days. But it's just another thing to be aware of.
If there is any part of this that doesn't make sense, comment below or send me a message.
Not ready yet? Here's what you should do then.
If you answered NO to one of the questions, don't get discouraged!
Sometimes the smartest move is simply preparing for the right opportunity.
1. Give yourself time.
If you're waiting for a bonus eligibility window to pass, mark your calendar and be patient.
2. Be intentional with new credit card applications.
Chase's 3/24 guideline may affect your approval odds. Consider your overall credit profile before opening additional accounts with Chase or any bank for that matter.
3. Explore a legitimate side hustle.
You don't need to build a massive company. Start with something you genuinely enjoy and can earn even the smallest income from.
4. Plan your everyday spending.
Review your upcoming normal expenses and determine whether you can meet a welcome bonus requirement without spending beyond your budget.
5. Keep an eye on changing offers.
Welcome bonuses can increase, decrease, or disappear. A different combination may make more sense when you're ready.
Bottom Line
Ready to bring your travel buddy along?
The Southwest Companion Pass can be an incredible tool for families, couples, and anyone who loves traveling with someone special. And the best part is that you don't need to be a frequent flyer to explore the credit card strategy.
All you need is the right eligibility, a little planning, responsible spending, and great timing.
Whether you're ready to start today or preparing for next year, you're already one step closer to making more travel memories for less.
Here's to more adventures, more family memories, and fewer full-price plane tickets!Ā āļøš
