Refresher- What is a Companion Pass?

The Southwest Companion Pass (CP) allows you to name one person (which can be changed up to 3x per year) to fly WITH you and unlimited amount of times for only the cost of taxes (domestic flights $5.60 each way) as long as you hold the CP.

Under the traditional "fast track"path, you need to earn 135,000 points which usually necessitates opening 2 cards, a business and a personal card.

How this offer is different

Instead of the 135,000 point requirement, simply opening ONE personal credit card with get you a CP. There are pros and cons to this offer, which I will get to.

Cons-

  • You don't get as many points to use towards flights as you do the traditional method

  • The time for which you hold the CP is, in reality less than a year

Commonly Asked Questions

Is it better to get this offer or the regular companion pass offer?

Generally speaking, I like the regular way better (1 business and 1 personal card). You get more points and if you play your cards right (pun intended), you'll hold that pass for longer. BUT if getting a business card isn't right for you at this point in time, this is a solid way to still get a companion pass.

What are the implications if I go for this offer?

You can only earn the bonus on a personal card once ever 24 months. So if you apply for and are approved for this card, you won't be eligible to apply for it again until at least March 2028 (or exactly 24 months after you earn the bonus).

What if I've already started working on earning a CP the traditional 2 card way?

If you've already opened the business card and need to open the personal card next, this complicates matters a little bit because you need 50,000 more points and none of the current offers are 50k. The work around here is, assuming you opened the 80k business card, open the Priority card from above. This is how it would shake out: 85k from bonus and spending from business card + 45k from bonus and spending from personal card + 10k Jan 1 boost you already received = 140,000 points

How do I know if I'm eligible for this card?

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Do I currently hold a Southwest personal card? If no, move on to the next question.

  • Have I earned a bonus on a Southwest personal card within the last 24 months? If no, continue to the next question.

  • Have I opened fewer than 5 personal credit cards (of any type) in the last 24 months? If yes, you’re eligible to apply! (You can read more about the “5/24 rule” here.)

Final Thoughts

I think this is a strong offer, especially if you’ve been denied for a business card or prefer not to (or can’t) pursue one using the traditional two-card strategy. It’s also a fast way to earn a Companion Pass, with the option to extend it later in the year by opening a business card.

If you’re not working with a spouse or friend to refer each other, I truly appreciate when you choose to use my referral links. It doesn’t cost you anything, and the offers are the same as going directly through the Chase website. And as always, when you use my links, I’m here to answer any questions you have — day or night.

Thank you again for your support!
